The first “Jonny” appeared on the promotion poster for Ernst Krenek’s Jonny Spielt Auf, an opera about a black jazz musician in Europe. The poster featured the lead actor in blackface posing with a saxophone. For several obvious reasons (such as the championing of black music, and that the character has an affair with a white maid) the Third Reich shut down the opera after its opening night. Years later, the Nazi’s stole the image, grotesquely caricaturized Jonny and added the Star of David for their anti-”Entartete Musik” (Degenerate Music) propaganda. Ten years ago, cartoonist Art Spiegelman (Maus) reclaimed the image for the Decca Records’ “The Music Survives” series. Jonny now represents the endurance of free speech, music, art and expression under the most severe forms of suppression and censorship.
