Line of Fire
New Mexico trucker felt set-up in Iraq.

I think this a little gem of a news piece. It ain’t often I get to write about issues of national importance, and this definitely fits that definition. Silver City trucker Edward Sanchez signed on with KBR, a Halliburton contractor, to transport supplies to reconstruction sites in Iraq. What he got was a bullet in the buttocks and another in his neck after KBR sent him and his coworkers into an insurgent ambush. He claims in a federal lawsuit that the corporation knew exactly what was in store for his convoy.

A crossword for dirty birds.

Once again I’m back with a filthy crossword. In other words, it’s not suitable for you, mom. Originally I’d designed the crossword to fit into, let us say, an explicit shape which ultimately wasn’t appropriate for our pages. Instead, I layered it over a classy photo with a dirty caption from the Library of Congress archives. The answers are available here (.pdf).

Plus, a very strong letter to the editor counterpointing my earlier death-penalty piece, Shot in the Dark.
